Batangas

Mt. Maculot

Mt. Maculot is one of the most popular day trip destinations. It is so popular that on weekends and summer months, there is a sari-sari store at the campsite. This mountain, at the heart of Batangas is known as a landmark for locals and travelers alike; it is easily identifiable because of its abruptly terminating east side – forming a  cliff that is challenging for rock climbers and breathtaking to everybody else.

We did a HOLIDAY hike, targeting a traverse, to make it more challenging for us. We started our trek in the middle of the night as part of our  eagerness to search for adventures. We had multiple attempts to search for the right trail, and it is really hard when you’re doing a night trek. Though Lourdes already climbed here before, but found it hard to search for the right trail.  We even reached the trail intended for the Marines during their military exercises.

We locate the right trail just before sunrise, and we reached the campsite around 0800H, and took our breakfast. We then headed to the Rockies and enjoyed the view. I was totally amazed when I saw the natural beauty of the Rockies. Its a formation of rocks facing Taal Lake. For me this is the second mountain that offers a unique view of the surroundings, Pico de loro being the first and the best.

When we reached the campsite, we took a quick nap. We saw group of hikers heading the traverse trail. After an hour, group decided to do a traverse and followed the last group who hit the trail. The trail was a muddy, even though there’s no rain, which made us more curious to go through it.

After awhile we saw the first group who decided to do a back trail because they say that the end of the trail is a dead end.  We then  also decided to head back, and luckily enough to witness the sunset from the Mt. Maculot Summit before we continued our descent all the way to the jump-off.

We’re all newbie in mountaineering and Mt. Maculot Traverse turns to Reverse is definitely a one of a kind experience. Soon we will return and settle some unfinished business.
